Behind the Veil

Hey Everyone!

I wanted to do a showcase moment about one of the things that I am most passionate about. I love to read and write, but I also really love creating and designing books. Book art is something that I get very excited about and something that is very special to me. I love the thrill of creating something that allowed me to show what I can really do.

As a little bit of background, I have not always felt that I should be allowed to create things and that it was something that was reserved for people who made actual art (paintings, drawings, etc.).

I have always liked writing, but I was told to do something practical rather than do something that would give me a larger probability of failing. I didn’t start experimenting with making books until my second year at UWB (University of Washington Bothell) that I allowed myself to step out of the bubble that I had put myself in and to really pursue something that interested me.

Behind the Veil is actually a poetry book that I wrote while being in an activist poetry class with Chelsea Grimmer. She pushed for students to create and take chances. I was not prepared for what I was getting myself into. I am not a poetry writer or reader. It’s not something that I go out of my way to read, but I am fortunate enough that I was given the freedom to do the final project in a way that I was able to get the most out of it.

This book means the world to me and I have never taken anything on quite like it.

Below I have the final photos of the book as well as all the files that are included in it. I am not looking to sell this, but it is something that I want people to be able to experience and see.

I really hope that all of you enjoy this and enjoy the narrative as much as I do.

Amanda Cook

(I am still working on putting all the files/poems in order – Thank you for understanding)
